Abstract

Undoubtedly, the existence of COVID-19 has left some untold hardships in the whole world, with Nigeria not being an exception. Its insurgent rate is felt in the many loss of lives, adverse economic effects, and a halt to religious gatherings and social interactions. From all of these, the issue of deception is one that many people were involved in during the emergence, lockdown and post-lockdown. The rate at which information integrity was not adhered to was so alarming that many Nigerians had hitherto believed that the issue of COVID-19 is indeed a hoax. Thus, using data gathered through secondary source (books, journal articles, and the Internet), this study examines the concept of deception as it pertains to the issue of COVID-19 with the government, companies and individuals. It also looks at the socio-religious implications of this deception in the country. It concludes that the issue of deception has made many people not trust the existence of the virus and how to tackle it headlong, but this is not to say that the COVID-19 pandemic is not real as evinced by some Nigerians.
